Okay, I'm confessing one of my mental glitches here. Maybe I'll confess a bunch of them and just get it out of my system. Major Amy glitches include not being able to remember where I park the car in parking garages and not being able to tell jokes because I can't remember the punch line (pattern emerging that glitches are memory related?). A long standing and deeply embedded glitch has to do with time and time zones. When I first went to college in Boston, my home in Alaska was 5 time zones away. I'm never clear whether that 5 hours is ahead or behind, so I just don't use that language. After a couple of years, somehow the humans in power decided to merge the Alaskan time zones, and my home became 4 time zones away. I didn't get it. I still don't get it. Are time zones linked to physical reality or not? Is San Francisco behind New York, or ahead? The reason I'm thinking about this is that Daylight Savings Time began (ended?) this weekend in France. I was already having plenty of difficulty calculating what time zone my husband sleeps in, and then he went from Colorado to California, adding an hour, and we moved our clocks ahead an hour here in France, but you nice people in America kept your clocks the same. It's very confusing to me that time is something that humans just change at will, and somehow isn't connected to the planting and harvesting of grain or the time between full moons or the decay of a cesium atom somewhere. Or is it?
